About OpenSEO
OpenSEO is a broad SEO research workspace for operators who want the core workflows of a traditional SEO suite without committing to a high fixed monthly price. It covers keyword discovery, live SERP research, competitor domains, backlinks, technical audits, rank tracking, and AI-search visibility. The hosted product starts at $10 per month with usage credits included, while the MIT-licensed code can be self-hosted with a separate DataForSEO account.
The strongest differentiator is its agent workflow. OpenSEO exposes SEO and first-party Google Search Console data through MCP so tools such as Codex, Claude, Cursor, and ChatGPT can research opportunities, compare competitors, read rank-tracking results, inspect URLs, and save useful keywords back to the workspace. That makes it especially interesting for technical founders, solo marketers, and lean agencies that already use AI agents as part of their operating process.
OpenSEO should not be treated as a complete reproduction of Ahrefs or Semrush. Its data layer comes from DataForSEO rather than a proprietary web index, and its reporting, collaboration, historical analysis, and advanced audit coverage are less mature than long-established suites. It is most compelling when selective usage and agent access matter more than maximum database depth or enterprise reporting.

Pricing Plans
Estimate this tool in your stackThe hosted Base Plan costs $10 per month and includes $10 in monthly usage credits. DataForSEO-backed actions such as keyword research, competitor data, backlinks, and site audits consume credits; extra top-up credits can be purchased and do not expire, but an active subscription is required to use the hosted product. Google Search Console data does not consume credits. The free trial includes $0.50 in credits. The MIT-licensed code can also be self-hosted with Docker or Cloudflare. Self-hosters bring their own DataForSEO API account and pay that provider directly, avoiding the 28% usage markup disclosed for OpenSEO's hosted service. Self-hosting lowers the software cost but adds deployment, maintenance, and data-provider setup.

Limitations
- Usage credits are still required because most research data comes from DataForSEO
- It does not reproduce the proprietary web index, historical depth, or reporting breadth of Ahrefs
- Advanced JavaScript-rendered site auditing is not planned
- Team, scheduled-reporting, and client-report workflows are still developing
- Frequent AI-visibility checks can cost more than the lightweight SEO workflows
